How to Measure for a Closet Rod

Step 1: Measure the Finished Opening

Start by measuring the finished space where the closet rod will be installed. This means measuring the inside opening after walls, panels, cabinetry, or vertical partitions are already in place.

For example, if your closet rod will run between two cabinet panels, measure the distance from the inside of one panel to the inside of the opposite panel.

For the most accurate result, measure the opening in more than one place. Walls and panels are not always perfectly square, so checking the front, middle, and back of the opening can help you confirm the correct rod length.

Step 2: Deduct for the End Supports

Once you have the finished measuring, deduct for the end supports. When using end supports from The Closet Rod Company, the supports add 1/4 inch per set to the finished space. That means your closet rod should be ordered 1/4 inch shorter than the finished opening if you will be using both supports in the set.

Example:
Finished opening: 30 inches
Deduct for end supports: 1/4 inch
Closet rod length to order: 29 3/4 inches

This deduction applies when using end supports from The Closet Rod Company. If you are using hardware from another supplier, check that manufacturer’s specifications before ordering.
